Legacy Cross Country Philosophy

The Legacy High School Cross Country team strives to foster positive, supportive relationships among its coaches and athletes. Our aim is to encourage and support each other through good times and difficult times. We believe in working together. We believe in having fun. We believe it is important to be honest with each other, keep each other accountable, and build each other up.

The sport of Cross Country is difficult. We will sometimes be exhausted, both physically and mentally. On this team, we learn that we can't always listen to our feelings. When our feelings tell us to quit, we realize that these very moments are opportunities for growth. Good things often don't come easy.

That being said, we acknowledge that we will not always do what we ought. We all will give in when we shouldn’t and we won’t always give our best. In these moments, the team’s role is to support each other and encourage each other to press on. This is a vital part of building a team. This sport takes hard work day in and day out, week after week from the beginning to the end of the season. When things get tough, leaders rise up and the team pulls individuals through.

We believe in consistency over time. In our training it is important to be consistent and to stay healthy. An injured runner can’t even toe the line! We value the principle of hard/easy. “Make the easy days easy so the hard days can be hard”. We believe that many factors, both those that happen during practice and away from practice have a significant effect on our performance.

Ultimately, we believe that each member of this team has value that stretches far beyond his or her ability to be a great runner. While we will train and prepare to be the best runners we can be, we understand that running is just a part of life. It is not our identity, thus it does not define who we are, but rather it is one of many things we do.

How exciting it is to share this time together. Let’s not forget to enjoy each other, the sport, the value of hard work, and competition.

GO SABERS!
